MORE on...the Giant Chinese Yo-yo
Basic instructions for starting your giant Chinese yo-yo: First, place the yo-yo on the string. Then place the yo-yo on the ground in front of you and to your right. Roll (on a smooth surface) from the right to the left side. As it passes your left foot lift the yo-yo off the ground (it should continue spinning in the right direction...keep the hand sticks fairly close to each other) as the yo-yo comes back in front of you begin drumming with your right hand. (The left hand holds tight and hangs loose but does no drumming motion...if it does the spin will stop.)
Correcting Tilt: As you start trying to control your yo-yo, you'll probably experience tilt early on. This is where one cup is up higher than the other. To correct this your right hand will do all the work just as it does all the drumming. If the cup furthest from you is up--the right hand will push out further than normal and the string will touch the cup that is up and will push it down. If the cup closest to you is up--the right hand will pull in toward your right shoulder, the string will touch the cup that is up and will push it down. Correct slowly and make sure that the yo-yo is spinning enough to try to correct.
Basic instructions for throwing and catching: Once you have the spin down, and you can keep the yo-yo level, you're ready to throw, catch and learn other tricks. To throw, you want to stop drumming, make sure your sticks are then at the same level and parallel to each other. With a quick, but not over-powering tug, pull the sticks straight apart from each other. The yo-yo should fly straight up if you have pulled equally with both sticks and kept them going straight apart without swinging the yo-yo forward or backward. As it goes up, keep the string tight and point the right hand up and aim it at the axel of the yo-yo as it starts coming down. When it hits the string again immediately relax the tension in the string and go back to a relaxed drumming position.
